Wales Invites You to Power Up a New Green Energy Adventure!

The Welsh government is asking people across Wales to give their opinions on a plan to create a new renewable energy company. This company would be owned by the government and would focus on developing and owning wind and solar power plants. The plan has received criticism from several political parties, including the Welsh Conservatives, Labour, and Reform. They argue that the government should focus more on making energy cheaper and protecting jobs, rather than creating another state-owned company. The Welsh government already owns Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru (TGC), a company that develops wind and solar energy projects. The new proposal suggests bringing TGC together with other Welsh energy initiatives, such as Ynni Cymru, which supports locally owned renewable energy projects. Enterprise Minister Adam Price explained that the government wants an energy system that is clean, affordable, and owned by the people of Wales. He believes that by combining different energy projects into one company, Wales can use its resources and expertise to make a real difference.

The consultation document says the new company would not replace existing energy suppliers or set household electricity prices. Instead, its purpose would be to help Wales reduce energy costs over time by developing and owning renewable energy assets, supporting local and community ownership, and investing in smart local energy systems. The company would also help more organizations use locally generated energy and try to attract investment into Welsh energy infrastructure. It would be separate from the UK government’s energy company, which was set up in 2024. TGC is currently working on several projects on land owned by the Welsh government, including wind farms at Carreg Wen and Glyn Cothi. The consultation asks whether TGC should form the basis of the new company and whether it should keep its name or choose a new one. It also suggests the company could invest in larger projects, such as offshore wind, marine energy, and nuclear power. The government is considering creating a Welsh Energy Wealth Fund to help support vulnerable people and those living in areas where energy projects are being built. Minister Adam Price said Wales was once an energy giant during the Industrial Revolution, but did not benefit as much as it could have. He wants to make sure Wales benefits from the new energy revolution. Other parties have raised concerns about the plan, saying Wales needs reliable and affordable energy to keep businesses running and household bills down.
