Arrests over paint thrown on London Marathon route

During the recent London Marathon, a significant event in the city, two individuals were arrested for throwing powder paint on Tower Bridge. This incident occurred just as the elite male runners were making their way across the bridge, creating a moment of chaos amidst the excitement of the race. The scene was filled with spectators who had gathered behind barriers on both sides of the road, eagerly watching the marathon unfold. The two protesters were affiliated with a group known as Youth Demand, and they leaped over the barriers to throw the colorful powder at approximately 10:35 AM BST. The Metropolitan Police reported that a member of the London Marathon event staff quickly intervened to ensure that the runners could pass through without any obstruction. Fortunately, the race continued smoothly just moments after the incident. The police also clarified that the paint used appeared to be chalk-based, which posed no danger to the runners who were yet to reach that point on the course. Following the incident, the two individuals were arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and are currently in police custody. A photo shared by the Youth Demand group depicted the two individuals standing in the middle of the road, wearing T-shirts that read, 'Youth Demand: Stop Arming Israel. ' Hugh Brasher, the chief executive of London Marathon Events, expressed his disappointment regarding the disruption caused by the protesters. He stated, 'It's very disappointing that two people attempted to disrupt the London Marathon which does so much good, raises so many millions for charity, brings so much joy and brings communities together. ' Brasher emphasized the importance of the marathon as an event that not only raises funds for various charities but also fosters a sense of community and joy among participants and spectators alike. He praised the quick response of both the staff and the police, noting that the event was not affected in any way by the protest.
