The reason prices might go up is because of something called the supply chain. The supply chain is all the steps food takes from being grown on a farm to being sold in a shop. For example, to make a loaf of bread, first the grain is grown, then it is harvested and turned into flour, then the bread is baked and packaged, and finally it is sent to the shops. Each step costs money, and if any part of the chain has a problem, it can make the final product more expensive. The British Retail Consortium, which represents shops, says that extreme weather like heatwaves can make prices go up because it affects the whole supply chain.

Farmers and experts say that one week of hot weather will not make food more expensive right away. However, if the hot and dry weather continues, it could cause bigger problems. For example, if there is not enough rain, crops will not grow as well, and there will be less food to sell. This could make prices go up for things like bread, milk, eggs, and meat. Some farmers say they will not get paid more even if they have less to sell, because they made contracts with supermarkets a year in advance. If there is not enough food in the UK, shops might try to bring in food from other countries, but those countries might also be having hot weather and less food. People who work in shops are doing their best to make sure there is enough food for everyone, but the weather is making it more difficult.
