Global Cyber Chaos: Schools and Universities Hit by ShinyHunters Hack

A major cyber attack disrupted thousands of schools and universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia this week. The attack targeted a popular academic software called Canvas, which is used by about 9,000 institutions to manage classes, assignments, and exams. The hacking group known as ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the attack, which caused Canvas to go offline for many users. Students and teachers were left confused and frustrated, especially since the attack happened during the busy end-of-year exam period. Some schools reported seeing a ransom note on their screens, demanding payment in bitcoin and threatening to release stolen data if the ransom was not paid.

Mississippi State University was one of the schools affected. They postponed final exams to give students time to recover lost work. Aubrey Palmer, a student there, said she had just finished a long exam essay when the ransom note appeared. She and her classmates were shocked and worried about whether their work was saved. The university sent emails to students, rescheduled exams, and warned them to ignore suspicious messages. Other universities, like the University of Sydney and Idaho State University, also canceled or rescheduled exams. They told students not to try logging into Canvas until the problem was fixed.

The attack caused anxiety among students, who were concerned about their grades and the safety of their personal information. Jacques Abou-Rizk, a student at Northwestern University, said he received a scary message from the hackers and was unsure if his data was safe. Some universities, like the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, advised students to log out of Canvas and wait for updates. The company that owns Canvas, Instructure, said that most users could access the platform again by late Thursday, but some schools were still experiencing problems. The US government is now discussing ways to improve cybersecurity and protect schools from future attacks. This incident highlights the importance of keeping online systems safe from hackers, especially as technology becomes more important in education.
