Warrington Artist Crafts Oscar-Winning Frankenstein Monster Magic!

Mike Hill, a talented sculptor from Warrington, has achieved something amazing by winning an Oscar. He was recognized for his work on the movie Frankenstein, where he created the monster for director Guillermo del Toro. Mike won the award for best make-up and hair styling, which is a huge honor in the film industry. He was very excited and said it was fantastic to be part of his dream project. Mike thanked Guillermo del Toro for giving him the chance to work on the film and called it a dream come true.

Mike did not always work in movies. He used to be a roofer, fixing roofs on houses. But ever since he was a child, he loved making models and sculptures. He told the BBC that when he was just five years old, he would walk to the canal, dig in the dirt to find clay, and use it to make little creatures like Frankenstein, King Kong, and Wolf Man. He said he has always been interested in monsters and making things with his hands.

Mike got his first big break in his twenties when he was asked to make disguises for a hidden camera TV show called Beadle's About. This opportunity helped him start his career in special effects and make-up. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he opened his own studio. There, he continued to create amazing monster designs. Guillermo del Toro became a regular customer and asked Mike to work on several of his films.

For the Frankenstein movie, Mike worked with a team that included make-up artist Jordan Samuel and hairstylist Cliona Furey. Together, they created the look of the monster. The actor who played the monster, Jacob Elordi, had to sit in the make-up chair for 400 hours while Mike and his team applied the make-up and prosthetics. Mike praised Jacob for his patience and called him his mate.

In his studio in Los Angeles, Mike has many sculptures and masks on display. He has made models of famous characters like Frankenstein, Dracula, and Spiderman. He showed the BBC some of his mask designs, including a large head of actor Oliver Read. Mike is proud of his work and hopes his story will inspire others to follow their passions, no matter where they start. He believes that with hard work and dedication, anyone can achieve their dreams.
