Torbay Bar's Live Tunes Silenced Amid Noise Complaints and Harbour Hustle

Torbay Council has decided to temporarily stop live music at Molly's, a popular bar located on Paignton's harbourside. This decision came after a five-hour meeting where the licensing sub-committee listened to complaints from people living nearby. Residents said the music from Molly's was so loud that it forced them to change their daily routines or even leave their homes. The bar owner, Lee Tyrrell, explained that live music never continued more than five minutes past nine o'clock in the evening, and his customers supported this claim. However, the committee chair, Councillor Mark Spacagna, said that without a proper noise management plan, the council had no choice but to stop the music. He also mentioned that Tyrrell could apply for a variation of his licence if he created a plan to control the noise.

The bar's solicitor, John Dunkley, argued that Paignton is a tourist area with a working harbour, and music venues are expected in such lively places. He pointed out that Molly's attracts people to the harbour and helps the local economy. Dunkley said, 'This is not a village on Exmoor. It's a thriving cultural part of Paignton where you would expect music venues to operate. '

According to a report, live music at Molly's was held up to three or four nights a week, starting in the early evening and lasting for three to four hours. Despite only four noise complaints from nearby residents, the council felt it was necessary to act. The bar owner now has the opportunity to submit a noise management plan and apply for a new licence. This situation highlights the balance that must be found between supporting local businesses and respecting the needs of residents. Molly's plays an important role in Paignton's culture and economy, but the council must ensure that everyone can enjoy the area without being disturbed by loud music.
