Northamptonshire Councils Turn to AI to Slash £37.6M Budget Shortfall

At North Northamptonshire Council, AI is being used to transcribe conversations, which means it writes down what people say. This saves staff time, so they can focus more on helping residents with their care and support needs. West Northamptonshire Council has tried using an AI chatbot on WhatsApp to answer questions about adult social care. The chatbot also helps with requests for education, health, and care plans, which can reduce the number of requests waiting to be answered. The council is also using technology to help adults live independently, with digital tools that support them at home.

However, not everyone thinks using AI in care is a good idea. Caroline Abrahams, who works for the charity Age UK, is worried that AI might make mistakes or not understand what people really need. She says that any technology used to help older or vulnerable adults should be designed with their needs in mind. The government says it does not force councils to use AI, but it does encourage them to use it to help with their work. Besides using AI, the councils are making other changes to save money. West Northamptonshire Council is raising council tax by four point nine five percent, charging more for garden waste and parking, and cutting budgets for things like community grants. The council says it is careful with its money and always looks for ways to improve services and save costs, while still protecting important services for residents. The council also wants the government to create a better funding system that matches the growing pressures on local councils. By using AI and making these changes, the councils hope to close their budget gaps and continue to support their communities.
