Belfast Goes Car-Free for Fleadh: Music, Dance, and No Traffic Jams!

Belfast city centre is set to transform during the first week of August as it hosts Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world’s largest festival of Irish music and dance. This is the first time the event will take place in Belfast, running from the second to the ninth of August. To make the festival safe and enjoyable for everyone, dozens of streets in the city centre will be closed to cars. The car-free zone will stretch from the front of City Hall, past Castlecourt Shopping Centre, all the way to the Ulster University campus on York Street. The city council expects around 800,000 visitors, so they are encouraging people to use public transport, walk, or cycle instead of driving into the city centre.

Lord Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly has asked everyone to help make the event a success by not driving into the city centre. She suggests that people walk, cycle, or use buses and trains, and to allow extra time for their journeys because the city will be much busier than usual. Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald also wants to reassure visitors. She says that Belfast is a welcoming community and that people should not be discouraged by any recent trouble in the city. She believes that visitors will have a fantastic time and that there is a lot to enjoy during the festival.

To keep everyone safe, there will be an increased police presence in the city centre. Officers will be available to answer questions and help people if needed. For those who need to drive, there will be three park-and-ride facilities outside Belfast, each costing ten pounds per day. Buses and trains will continue to run, with some minor changes to stops and schedules. There are also three official campsites for tents and camper vans. Most festival events are within a fifteen-minute walk of the city centre. Shops will have longer opening hours, and a special food and drink village will be set up near Belfast Cathedral. Deliveries to city centre businesses will happen overnight, and coaches will operate from Linenhall Street. The festival is a major event for Belfast, and the city is preparing to welcome visitors from all over Ireland and beyond.
