First UK-based firm gets space launch licence

Skyrora, a Scottish rocket company based in Edinburgh, has made history by becoming the first UK-based firm to receive a space launch licence. This important licence was granted by the Civil Aviation Authority, or CAA, which is responsible for making sure that all space and aviation activities in the UK are safe and follow strict rules. With this new licence, Skyrora can now launch rockets from the SaxaVord Spaceport, which is located on the island of Unst in Shetland, the northernmost part of the UK. Both Skyrora and the CAA have called this achievement a huge milestone for the UK’s growing space industry.

The licence allows Skyrora to launch and operate its suborbital rocket, called Skylark L, from the spaceport. The company hopes to launch this rocket up to 16 times a year by 2030. The Skylark L is an impressive piece of technology, standing 11 meters tall and built using 3D-printed parts made in the UK. It is capable of reaching speeds up to 3. 5 times the speed of sound and can travel as high as 310 miles above the Earth. This means the rocket will go into space and then return to Earth, making it useful for scientific experiments that need to be done in microgravity, where there is very little gravity. Skyrora says that using their rocket for these experiments will be less expensive than using larger rockets that go into orbit.

The news has been welcomed by many people in the UK’s space sector. Rob Bishton, the chief executive of the CAA, said that giving Skyrora the licence is a major step forward for the UK’s space industry. He believes it will help the industry grow, create new jobs, and bring more investment to the country. Skyrora’s chief executive, Volodymyr Levykin, said that getting the licence was a long and challenging process, but it was worth it in the end. He praised his team for their hard work and said that safety is their top priority. Scottish Secretary Ian Murray also celebrated the news, saying it is a big boost for Scotland and the UK. He is proud that Scotland is leading the way in new space technology and is looking forward to seeing rockets launch from Shetland. The SaxaVord Spaceport was once an RAF radar station, but now it is being transformed into a hub for space launches.
