'Saving the ocean is all I've ever wanted to do'

Emily Cunningham is a remarkable woman who has dedicated her life to protecting the ocean. Growing up in Stafford, she faced many challenges and was often told that her dream of becoming a marine biologist was unrealistic for someone from her background. However, she never let those words discourage her. Now, more than 20 years later, she has not only achieved her dream but has also been honored with an MBE in the King's New Year Honours list for her outstanding contributions to marine conservation and coastal communities. Emily expressed her gratitude for the award, stating, 'Saving the ocean is all I've ever wanted to do. ' Throughout her career, she has worked on numerous conservation projects both in the UK and internationally, including significant work in Antarctica and the Amazon rainforest. Emily has successfully secured over £5 million in funding for various initiatives aimed at protecting marine life. One of her notable achievements is co-founding Motion for the Ocean, which is the first ocean recovery declaration for local governments. This initiative encourages councils to recognize the urgent need to protect the ocean as part of the climate emergency. So far, 33 local authorities, including Stafford Borough Council, have adopted this declaration. Emily's passion for marine conservation began at a young age. At just eight years old, she started a charity project called Manatees and Dolphins, where she raised £87 over 18 months. Since then, she has continued her voluntary work by organizing beach clean-ups, wildlife surveys, and educational talks. She has also served as a trustee for the Marine Conservation Society and was recognized as one of the 30 under-30 global environmental leaders by the North American Association for Environmental Education in 2020. Emily believes that marine conservation is not just a job for her; it is her life’s passion and mission. She acknowledges the challenges that come with this work, stating, 'It can be a tough and thankless task given the scale of the challenges facing our ocean, so to be recognized in this way means the world.
