Ex-K-pop CEO Offers $18M to Save NewJeans from Label Drama!
The popular K-pop group NewJeans is facing a tough situation because of a conflict with their record label. The group, made up of Hyein, Hanni Pham, Minji, Danielle Marsh, and Haerin, became famous quickly after their debut in 2022. Their unique style, which mixes 1990s R&B with catchy pop melodies, made them stand out in the music world. However, things changed when Min Hee-jin, the CEO of their label Ador and someone the group saw as a mentor, was fired by Hybe, the parent company of Ador, in August 2024.
After Min was removed from her position, NewJeans announced that they wanted to leave the agency. But a South Korean court decided that the group must stay with Ador until their contract ends in 2029. Meanwhile, Min and Hybe have been involved in several legal battles. In one case, the court ordered Hybe to pay Min about $18 million because of a contract called a put option, which lets someone sell an asset at a set price in the future. Hybe is appealing this decision.
Min Hee-jin recently made a surprising offer. She said she would give up the $18 million payout if Hybe would drop all lawsuits against NewJeans, their partners, former employees, and fans. Min explained that she cares more about the group’s happiness and future than about money. She said she can’t stand to see NewJeans being 'torn apart' and wants them to be able to perform together happily. Fans have been supporting the group online, asking Hybe to 'free NewJeans' and let them continue their careers without more trouble. Min ended her statement by asking Hybe’s chairman to meet her in the 'space of creation' instead of the courtroom. Hybe has not responded to her offer yet, and many people are waiting to see what will happen next for NewJeans.
