Colin Firth Battles Welsh Winter in Young Sherlock's Victorian Adventure
The new Prime series Young Sherlock, inspired by the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, was filmed in Wales during a very cold winter, which made things difficult for the cast and crew. The show is a fresh take on Sherlock Holmes, focusing on his younger years and how he became the well-known detective. Even though the story is set in 19th-century England, France, and Turkey, much of the filming actually took place in Wales, as well as in Oxford and southwest England. Deon du Preez, the supervising locations manager, said that finding and building the right locations for the series was both a challenge and a privilege. He explained that Wales has many Victorian-era streets, old buildings, and country estates that were perfect for the show’s setting.
The cast includes Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth, who plays Sir Bucephalus Hodge, the dean of Oxford University. He is an important character who helps set the main mystery in motion. Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as the young Sherlock Holmes, and the show also features Joseph Fiennes, who is Hero’s uncle and a well-known actor. The actors wore clothes that looked like they were from the 1800s, such as three-piece suits and long skirts, to make the show feel authentic. The crew filmed in several locations across south Wales, including the Merthyr Mawr estate in Bridgend, the market town of Monmouth, and Margam Park near Port Talbot.
One of the most challenging parts of filming was creating a Chinese village for a flashback scene. The team built this village in the Bannau Brycheiniog mountains, which was tough because of the cold Welsh winter and the show’s budget. However, du Preez said that once they realized the landscape of the Brecon Beacons was perfect, they built a yurt village that looked great on camera. The eight-episode series is directed by Guy Ritchie, who also directed the 2009 Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr. The new series is expected to be a family affair, with Hero Fiennes Tiffin acting alongside his uncle. The cast and crew worked hard to make the show look and feel like the 19th century, and they are excited for viewers to see their work when the series is released.
