UK Gardens Go Bananas: Warm Weather Sparks Tropical Fruit Frenzy!

Bananas are becoming a surprising sight in British gardens, thanks to warmer summers and milder winters. Emma and Peter Stav, who live in Rayleigh, Essex, have been waiting for 15 years for their banana plants to finally produce fruit. They have a collection of 200 banana plants, and Peter, a school teacher, said he was absolutely amazed when he saw the fruit appear. The changing climate in Britain is helping heat-loving plants like bananas, olives, figs, and apricots to thrive, while traditional British crops such as gooseberries and rhubarb are struggling in some areas. Guy Barter from The Royal Horticultural Society explained that bananas never used to flower in Britain 20 years ago, but now they are starting to bloom more often. He said it is a special occasion when banana flowers appear in a British garden.

The Musa Basjoo banana plant is well-known for its ability to survive UK winters, but its flowers often need protection from frost. Emma and Peter have built walls around their banana plants to trap heat and create a microclimate, which helps the plants during colder weather. Peter mentioned that he used to wrap the plants to protect them, but now they are nearly three meters tall, making it difficult to wrap them. This year, due to the heatwave, the plants finally produced fruit. He explained that when you plant one banana, you often get many more because the plants split and produce new shoots.

Elsewhere in the East of England, Stephen Hind, a 76-year-old gardener, was delighted when his banana plant produced fruit for the first time. He bought the plant for his exotic garden because he liked how it looked, and he believes the hot temperatures helped it grow bananas. Stephen takes pride in maintaining his garden, which is filled with exotic plants and trees. TV presenter and botanist James Wong said that the warmer UK temperatures have made it much easier to grow bananas. He explained that bananas grow very quickly if they have enough heat, and in colder areas, people can wrap the stems to protect them from frost. Wong also pointed out that Musa Basjoo bananas are not really meant for eating, describing them as having a texture like ball bearings with only a small amount of banana. While growing bananas in the UK is still unusual for most people, it is becoming more common as the climate changes.
