Art Therapy: The Creative Cure Slashing Medics' Burnout in Half!
A recent study in London has found that art therapy can significantly reduce stress and burnout among medical staff. The research, conducted by Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust, involved 129 doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals from several London hospitals. The participants were split into two groups: one group attended weekly group art therapy sessions, while the other group was placed on a waitlist and did not participate in the sessions during the study period. After six weeks, those who took part in art therapy reported much lower levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, stress, anxiety, and depression compared to those who did not participate.
The art therapy sessions involved sitting around a table with colored pens and drawing materials, allowing participants to express their feelings through art. Megan Tjasink, the principal art psychotherapist at Barts Health NHS Trust and one of the study leaders, explained that while medical professionals are skilled at solving problems logically, they often struggle to process their emotions due to the intense and challenging nature of their work. Art therapy provided a safe space for them to communicate and share feelings that might otherwise be difficult to express. The sessions were led by trained psychological professionals, ensuring that any difficult emotions that arose could be handled safely.
Doctors who attended the sessions shared positive feedback. Dr. Umur Guven, an oncologist, said the sessions gave him time to pause and remember his humanity, allowing him to express his feelings through art. Dr. Lani Walshaw, who works in oncology, found the sessions therapeutic after emotionally challenging shifts. She said that taking time out for art helped her cope with the difficult situations she faced daily. Dr. Francesco Rosato, an anaesthetist, mentioned that the sessions helped him feel less isolated, as he realized others shared similar feelings. Consultant anaesthetist Dr. Giampaolo Martinelli described the sessions as protected time where he could focus on himself and feel removed from the pressures of the hospital environment.
The study also found that the benefits of art therapy lasted for at least three months after the sessions ended. Megan Tjasink believes that group art therapy could be helpful in other professions as well, such as teaching, social care, and corporate jobs, where burnout is also a common issue. However, she emphasized that art therapy is not a cure-all and should be used alongside other strategies to address burnout and mental health challenges. The art therapy sessions are funded by Barts Charity and have now been introduced in five hospitals within the Barts Health NHS Trust. The hope is that more workplaces will consider art therapy as a way to support staff well-being and reduce burnout.
