Rock 'n' Roll Revival: Artist Transforms City Pub into Art & Music Haven

Mason Newman, a talented artist known for working with stars like Ozzy Osbourne and Madonna, has taken on an exciting new project in Birmingham. He is reopening the historic Gunmakers Arms pub, which dates back to the 1800s, and transforming it into a vibrant rock 'n' roll art gallery and bed and breakfast. Mason has added his unique pop art style to the pub, making it a lively and creative space. The pub features seven rooms upstairs, each with its own art or music theme, while downstairs offers food, art exhibitions, and displays from other local artists. Mason's goal is to support and showcase local talent, giving artists in Birmingham a place to shine.

Earlier this year, the Gunmakers Arms closed its doors, but Mason saw an opportunity to bring it back to life. He lives near the pub and wanted to create a cool spot for students, artists, and anyone who loves music and art. Mason told BBC Radio WM, 'The city needs coolness. The students need somewhere to go, for people like me to go, for everyone to go. ' He noticed that many bars were closing, so he decided to turn the pub into an art gallery and help local artists. Mason admits that reopening the pub is a big risk, but he believes it will succeed. He joked, 'I'm going to be going to the foodbank next week if this doesn't work - it's a big risk but it's going to pay off. '

The Gunmakers Arms is located in Birmingham's old Gun Quarter and has a large beer garden. Mason describes himself as a 'poor man's Andy Warhol' and wants the pub to support local bands, show football games, and be a creative hub. The bed and breakfast will open in 2026, and a portion of all artwork sold will be donated to Birmingham Children's Hospital. Each of the seven rooms will have a rock 'n' roll or art theme, inspired by famous artistic hotels in California and London. Mason has also designed clothes, sold a brand to TK Maxx, and was creative director for Madonna's fashion label. He was featured on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list and had his first solo art exhibition in London in February 2024. Mason is passionate about promoting Birmingham and wants to see more local artists supported. The community has welcomed his new venture, and Mason is excited to make the Gunmakers Arms the coolest place to stay in the city.
