UK Butterflies Face Big Drops After 50 Years of Volunteer Tracking

Butterflies are some of the most loved insects in the UK, but a new report shows that many of them are disappearing. For the past 50 years, volunteers have been taking part in a huge survey called the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. This project, run by Butterfly Conservation and its partners, has collected more than 44 million records about butterflies since 1976. The results are worrying: 33 out of the 59 butterfly species in the UK have declined over this period. This means that more than half of the country’s butterflies are now less common than they used to be.

The survey is the largest of its kind in the world. Volunteers have visited over 7,600 different sites, walking enough to circle the globe 40 times. Their work has shown that some butterflies are doing better than others. For example, the Red Admiral butterfly has actually increased in number by more than 300 percent. This is because warmer weather now allows it to survive in the UK all year round. However, many other butterflies are struggling. Species that need special habitats, like woodlands or chalk grasslands, are finding it hard to survive. The Pearl-bordered Fritillary has dropped by 70 percent, and the White-letter Hairstreak has fallen by 80 percent since the survey began.

Experts say that the main reasons for these declines are habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. As more land is used for building and farming, there are fewer places for butterflies to live. Pollution and changes in the weather also make it harder for them to survive. Professor Richard Fox from Butterfly Conservation says that restoring habitats is the key to helping butterflies recover. He believes that conservation work is more important than ever. Even though 2025 was the sunniest year on record, it was only an average year for butterflies. This shows that there is still a lot of work to do to protect these beautiful insects for the future.
