Crawford also notes that if OpenAI starts using advertising as a business model, it becomes even more important to keep health data completely separate from other information the chatbot remembers.

OpenAI reports that over 230 million people ask ChatGPT questions about health and wellbeing every week. The company claims that ChatGPT Health has enhanced privacy features to protect sensitive data. Users can choose to share their health app data and medical records, which allows the chatbot to give more relevant and helpful responses. However, OpenAI stresses that this tool is meant to support, not replace, professional medical care. Max Sinclair, the CEO of Azoma, an AI marketing platform, describes the launch of ChatGPT Health as a 'watershed moment' that could change how people access health information and even influence what products they buy to manage their health.

Currently, ChatGPT Health is only available to a small group of early users in the US, and there is a waitlist for others who want to try it. The feature has not been launched in the UK, Switzerland, or the European Economic Area, where there are strict rules about how companies can process and protect user data. In the US, Crawford warns that some companies are not required to follow these strict privacy protections, which means there is a risk that health data could be collected, shared, or used in ways that put people's privacy in danger. He says that without strong data protection policies, sensitive health information could be at risk.
