‘Blasphemous’ same-sex nativity scene angers conservatives in Italy

A nativity scene in an Italian church has sparked controversy due to its unconventional depiction of the Holy Family. The scene, which features two mothers for the Baby Jesus instead of the traditional Mary and Joseph, has incited anger among conservative Catholics and politicians in Italy. Nativity scenes hold significant cultural importance in Italy, a predominantly Catholic nation. However, in recent years, these scenes have become a battleground for cultural debates as the country evolves into a more secular and multicultural society.

The priest at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, located in the hamlet of Capocastello di Mercogliano, has staunchly defended the nativity scene. Father Vitaliano Della Sala stated that his intention was to reflect the changing dynamics of families in contemporary society. He noted that their parishes are witnessing an increase in children from diverse family backgrounds, including those of separated or divorced parents, gay couples, single individuals, and young mothers.

Father Della Sala, who is recognized in Italy for his support of LGBT and left-wing causes, asserts that his stance aligns with that of Pope Francis, who recently sanctioned priests to bless same-sex couples. However, Senator Maurizio Gasparri of the Forza Italia party criticized the nativity scene, stating that it offends those who revere the Holy Family. The Pro-Vita & Famiglia group labeled the nativity scene as dangerous, shameful, and blasphemous, and initiated an online petition urging the bishop of Avellino to intervene. The petition has garnered over 21,000 signatures to date.
