Orkney's Banana Bonanza: 38,000 Bananas Spark Island Giveaway Frenzy!

A supermarket in Orkney, Scotland, recently found itself with a huge surplus of bananas after a simple ordering mistake. The Tesco store in Kirkwall meant to order 380 kilograms of bananas, but instead, they accidentally ordered 380 wholesale boxes. Each box contains about 100 bananas, so the store ended up with an estimated 38,000 bananas. This is almost double the population of the Orkney islands, which makes the mistake even more surprising.

The bananas arrived at the store over the weekend. Normally, if a store receives too much of a product, they can send it back to the supplier on the mainland. However, strong winds and ferry disruptions made it impossible to return the bananas this time. With so many bananas and no way to send them back, the store had to come up with a creative solution.

Tesco decided to give away the bananas to the local community. Paula Clarke, the store's community champion, posted an appeal on social media. She invited local groups, such as toddler clubs, football teams, and other organizations, to come and collect boxes of bananas. The response was quick, and many groups showed up to take the extra fruit. Tesco also arranged for bananas to be sent to Orkney's outer islands, making sure that as many people as possible could benefit from the surplus.

This is not the first time Orkney has seen a big ordering mistake. Two years ago, a small shop on the island of Sanday accidentally ordered 720 Easter Eggs instead of the 80 they wanted. That time, the extra eggs were used for a charity fundraiser. However, bananas have a much shorter shelf life than chocolate eggs, so the store had to act fast to avoid waste.

The banana mix-up has become a funny story in Orkney, and many people are enjoying the free fruit. The store is glad that the bananas are being shared with the community instead of being thrown away. It shows how a simple mistake can bring people together and create a positive outcome, even when things do not go as planned.
