US may soon deport migrants to Libya - reports

Recent reports indicate that the United States may soon begin deporting migrants to Libya as part of its ongoing efforts to manage immigration. Two officials, who chose to remain anonymous, shared this information with CBS News. They mentioned that the US military could potentially start transporting migrants to Libya as early as this week. This decision is expected to generate significant debate, especially considering that Libya has been embroiled in conflict for over a decade. The US State Department has advised American citizens against traveling to Libya due to various concerns, including crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The BBC has reached out to the US State Department for further comments regarding this situation. Libya is believed to be one of several nations that the Trump administration has approached to accept deported migrants. Other countries that have been mentioned in media reports include Benin, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, and Moldova. However, it remains unclear how many individuals the US intends to deport to Libya or which specific regions within Libya they would be sent to. Since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been divided into two factions. The western part is governed by a UN-backed administration, while the eastern region is under the control of military leader General Khalifa Haftar. Last Monday, Haftar's son met with US officials in Washington, but both the US State Department and a Libyan spokesperson clarified that the meeting did not pertain to deportations. Since taking office again in January, President Trump has initiated a mass deportation campaign, sometimes employing controversial tactics, including the invocation of an ancient wartime law. Earlier this week, the government made additional moves related to this ongoing issue.
