
Wales' Summer Wildfires: Hidden Soil Damage Threatens Nature's Future
This summer, Wales experienced some of its worst wildfires in recent years, causing damage that goes far beyond what is visible on the surface. Scientists from Bangor University, including Professor Dave Chadwick and Professor Davey Jones, have been investigating the aftermath at sites like Mynydd Llangynidr and Sychnant Pass. Wearing protective gear, they are carefully sampling the soil and vegetation to understand the true impact of the fires. The wildfires were triggered by extreme heat and dry weather during July and August, which made areas like heathland, moorland, and upland grasslands highly vulnerable. The fires spread rapidly, burning approximately 2,760 acres in north Wales alone, which is more than 1,500 football pitches. At Sychnant Pass, one of the most significant blazes affected about 200 acres.
Professor Jones explains that while people notice the blackened plants and scorched earth, the real story is beneath their feet. The fires destroyed about 10 centimeters of soil at Sychnant Pass, wiping out thousands of years of organic matter and carbon in a single event. This loss is critical because soil acts as a sponge for water, a store for carbon, and a bank for nutrients. Without it, the land becomes more fragile and climate change worsens. Jones emphasizes that the site took thousands of years to develop, but it was destroyed in just a few days. If we want to restore the soil, we need to understand its current quality so we can design artificial soils using organic waste.
The Bangor team has been working quickly to collect soil samples before winter rains wash away the remains. They compare burned areas with untouched land to measure changes in soil carbon, nutrients, microbial activity, water repellency, and erosion risk. NASA satellite data helps them identify new sites after fires. Dr Kara Marsden, a soil science lecturer, says it is crucial to measure the soil and vegetation properties soon after the fire because conditions change rapidly. Early green shoots, like bracken, may appear quickly because their roots are deep, but plants with shallow roots, such as heather and gorse, are completely lost and may take thousands of years to return.
Wildfires also release carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. Professor Jones warns that without rapid restoration and better wildfire preparedness, we could lose these habitats within our lifetime. The researchers will return to the sites over the next two years to track recovery and see if some habitats are more resilient than others. Early evidence suggests that vegetation can return, but more slowly and more fragile, making the landscape more susceptible to future fires. The scientists hope their work will help prepare for the future and protect these unique ecosystems.
