Bear Hunt Artist Helen Oxenbury Returns Home for Magical Art Exhibit

Helen Oxenbury is a well-known artist who created the illustrations for the beloved children's book 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt,' written by Michael Rosen in 1989. This book has become a favorite for many families, with its exciting story about a family searching for a bear and the beautiful pictures that bring the adventure to life. Now, Helen Oxenbury is returning to her hometown of Ipswich to open a special exhibition that celebrates her work. The exhibition, called 'Adventures in Childhood,' will feature 50 of her most famous illustrations, including those from 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt. '

Although 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' is the book that made Helen Oxenbury famous, she admitted that it was not her favorite one to illustrate. She enjoyed working on other books even more, such as 'So Much' by Trish Cook and 'Farmer Duck' by Martin Waddell. The exhibition will also include her artwork from Edward Lear's poem 'The Quangle Wangle's Hat,' showing her wide range of talent. The event is part of a week-long celebration of childhood education at the University of Suffolk. During this time, children will have the chance to participate in drawing workshops and see their own creations displayed alongside Helen's work. Helen believes that sharing stories is a very important part of growing up, and she is happy that her art can help inspire children to be creative.

Helen Oxenbury was born in 1938 and studied at the Ipswich School of Art in the 1950s. She has fond memories of her childhood in Ipswich, including taking ballet lessons on Fonnereau Road. She is looking forward to visiting the places she remembers from her youth. On Friday, Helen will have a conversation with artist James Mayhew, who will also lead workshops for schoolchildren. Zeb Soanes, the university chancellor and an author, will join them as well. Dr Amanda Hodgkinson, director of the Suffolk Centre of Culture and Heritage, said she has always loved Helen's illustrations and has read her books to her own children. She hopes the exhibition will encourage young people to develop their creative and critical thinking skills, which are important for their future. The exhibition will be open at the Waterfront Gallery in Ipswich throughout the summer, giving many people the chance to enjoy Helen Oxenbury's wonderful art.
