Julia Freeman faced a big challenge after being diagnosed with breast cancer twice. She had to go through surgery and chemotherapy, which made her body feel weak and different. After her treatment, Julia found it hard to trust her body again and was nervous about moving or exercising. That changed when she discovered Move to Nurture, a dance class in Plymouth designed for people who have been affected by cancer. The class is open to anyone who has cancer, is getting treatment, or is living in remission. It is free and easy to join, and it is led by Linda Hesselden and her daughter Maryam Pourian.
Move to Nurture offers both seated and standing dance movements, so everyone can participate at their own level. Linda was one of the first teachers in the UK to teach the Silver Swan ballet program, which was created for people over 55 by the Royal Academy of Dance. She started these classes in 2017, and now she has more than 70 students, including some who are as old as 90. When some of her students started cancer treatment, Linda realized there was a need for a more gentle and accessible class. That is how Move to Nurture began. The classes are supported by the National Lottery, Macmillan, and other organizations, making them free for everyone.
For many people, Move to Nurture is much more than just a dance class. Sarah McCourt, one of the members, said she found a part of herself that she lost when she was sick. Suzie Eastment said the class is the highlight of her week. The group is full of laughter and friendship, and the members support each other. They also do activities together outside of class, like raising money for cancer research and joining events such as Race for Life. The teachers lead the group through gentle movements that help with balance, flexibility, and confidence. Even famous dancer Amy Dowden, who was on Strictly Come Dancing, said that dancing helped her during her cancer treatment. She said that even small movements can make a big difference for your body and your mind.
Move to Nurture is the only class of its kind in Devon, and more and more people want to join. Because of this, Linda and Maryam are adding more classes to their schedule. The group shows how dance can help people feel better, both physically and emotionally. Other organizations, like the English National Ballet, also offer special dance programs for people with health problems. Their artistic director, Aaron Watkin, said that dance is powerful for the mind, body, and soul, and that everyone can enjoy it in their own way. The members of Move to Nurture are proof that dance can help people heal, make friends, and find joy again after illness.
