NASA is preparing for its first crewed Moon mission in over 50 years, called Artemis II. The mission could launch as early as the first week of February. On Saturday, NASA rolled out its massive Space Launch System rocket and the Orion Space Capsule from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. This process took nearly 12 hours and covered four miles. Engineers are now getting the rocket ready by connecting important equipment and making sure everything works. At the end of January, NASA will do a test called a wet dress rehearsal, where they fuel the rocket and check for any problems. If everything goes well, the earliest launch date is Friday, February 6. The Moon also needs to be in the right position, so NASA has picked several possible launch dates in February, March, and April.
The Artemis II crew includes four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, who is the commander, Victor Glover, the pilot, Christina Koch, a mission specialist, and Jeremy Hansen, another mission specialist from the Canadian Space Agency. This will be the first time astronauts fly on the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft. Once in orbit, the crew will test how the Orion capsule handles by manually flying it around Earth. They will practice steering and lining up the spacecraft for future Moon landings. After that, they will travel thousands of kilometers beyond the Moon to check Orion’s life-support, propulsion, power, and navigation systems. The astronauts will also act as medical test subjects, sending back data and images from deep space. They will live and work in a small cabin in weightlessness, where radiation levels are higher than on the International Space Station but still safe. When they return to Earth, they will experience a rough ride through the atmosphere and splash down in the Pacific Ocean.
Artemis II will not land on the Moon. Its main goal is to prepare for Artemis III, which will be the first mission to land astronauts on the lunar surface since Apollo 17 in 1972. NASA hopes to launch Artemis III in 2027 or 2028, but the exact date depends on when the new lunar lander and spacesuits are ready. The Artemis program aims to create a long-term human presence on the Moon, starting with building a small space station called Gateway. Later missions will add more sections to Gateway and send robotic rovers to explore the Moon’s surface. Other countries, including Europe, Japan, China, Russia, and India, also have plans to send astronauts to the Moon in the 2030s. The Artemis program is a big step toward international cooperation and long-term exploration of the Moon.
