Google's DeepMind has created a new artificial intelligence model called AlphaGenome that could change how we understand DNA, the code that tells our bodies how to grow and work. The model can even predict what happens if just one letter in the DNA changes. This is important because small changes in DNA can make people more likely to get diseases like high blood pressure, dementia, or obesity. Scientists are excited because AlphaGenome could help them find out which changes in DNA cause diseases and help them develop new medicines.
Many researchers are already using AlphaGenome to study diseases. For example, Dr. Gareth Hawkes from the University of Exeter is using it to learn how changes in DNA might increase the risk of obesity and diabetes. AlphaGenome helps scientists quickly predict what these changes do, so they can test their ideas in the lab. The model is also being used to study cancer, to find out which changes in DNA are causing cancer and which ones are not important. Experts say AlphaGenome is a big step forward, but it is not perfect yet. It still needs to be improved, especially in predicting how genes are controlled over long distances in the DNA and in different types of cells. Still, scientists believe that AlphaGenome and other AI tools will help us make many new discoveries about how our bodies work and how to treat diseases.
