Recent data from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service shows that there were 156 incidents involving lithium batteries in the past year, which is 64 more than the previous year. Over the last three years, Portsmouth has had 39 battery-related fires, Southampton has had 24, and the Isle of Wight has had 18. One of these fires was so serious that it caused part of the M275 motorway to close for a weekend. In response to these risks, Hampshire County Council is seeking to extend temporary planning permission for two of its household waste recycling centers, located at Fishery Lane on Hayling Island and Casbrook near Romsey, for another ten years.
