In Henley-on-Thames, a new interactive mural has been created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Thames Path, a famous walking trail that follows the River Thames for 185 miles. The artist behind the mural, Vickie Amiralis, wanted to make something that would encourage families to explore nature together. The mural is filled with colorful images of wildlife that can be found along the river, such as birds, seals, and otters. Vickie explained that the mural is designed to help families connect with the outdoors by spotting the animals and plants they see in the artwork and then looking for them in real life. She said, 'It's designed to get families interacting with the real world and spotting what they see on the mural. '
One of the special features of the mural is a QR code that visitors can scan with their phones. This code gives people more information about the animals and plants shown in the mural, making the experience both fun and educational. Vickie said, 'It's meant to be fun for children as well as educational. ' Hannah Gutteridge, the manager of the Thames Path, called the mural a 'real celebration of the nature on the trail. ' She talked about the wide variety of wildlife that lives along the path, including birds in nature reserves and even seals and otters. Hannah said, 'You've just got to keep your eyes peeled and you'll be amazed what you can see. '
To mark the 30th anniversary, several events are planned, including a walking relay where community groups will each walk a section of the trail throughout June. This relay is meant to celebrate the different communities along the Thames Path and what they contribute to the trail. However, there is a challenge: a 2. 7-mile section of the path in Henley-on-Thames is currently closed. The Environment Agency closed it in 2022 because of safety concerns, and repairs have been delayed due to high costs. Hannah explained, 'We've now reached a point where some of this infrastructure has come to the end of its life, so what are we going to do about the next 30 years? ' Despite this setback, the community is excited to celebrate the Thames Path and the nature that makes it special. The mural and the planned events are a reminder of how important it is to protect and enjoy the natural world around us.
