China has accused the United States of seriously breaking the terms of their recent trade agreement, calling it a severe violation of the truce they had agreed upon. The Ministry of Commerce in China stated that the US actions have undermined the deal made during talks in Geneva last month, where both countries agreed to reduce tariffs on goods imported from each other. This agreement was seen as a hopeful step toward easing trade tensions between the two economic giants. However, China claims that the US has not only failed to honor the agreement but has also violated the understanding reached during a phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump earlier this year.

The trade truce involved the US lowering tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China reduced its tariffs on American goods from 125% to 10%. Despite this progress, China has pointed out several US actions that it views as breaches of the deal. These include the US stopping the sale of computer chip design software to Chinese companies, issuing warnings against using chips made by Huawei, a major Chinese technology company, and canceling visas for Chinese students. These moves have raised concerns about the stability of the trade agreement and the future of US-China economic relations.

While these accusations suggest that the trade talks are facing difficulties, US officials remain hopeful that the issues can be resolved. Treasury Secretary Bessent mentioned that details of the trade deal would be worked out once Presidents Xi and Trump have a conversation, although the timing of this call has not been confirmed. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett also said that both sides are willing to talk and that the leaders are expected to speak soon. Meanwhile, President Trump announced an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, aiming to support American industries and reduce reliance on Chinese products. This situation highlights the complex and ongoing challenges in US-China trade relations, with both cooperation and conflict playing important roles.
