The 2026 Edinburgh International Festival is set to be a remarkable celebration of music, theatre, and culture, with a special focus on America. Nicola Benedetti, the festival’s director and a renowned violinist from Ayrshire, has chosen the theme All Rise to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. This year’s festival will feature the largest group of American artists since the event began in 1947. Nicola’s connection to America started when she was just 16, after winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year award. She recalls her first trip to the United States, where she was fascinated by the lively conversations and the country’s energy. Now, she wants to share her passion for American music and culture with audiences in Edinburgh.

One of the highlights of the festival is the residency of the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis. Marsalis is a celebrated trumpet player and composer, and his orchestra was founded 40 years ago with musicians who had played with jazz legend Duke Ellington. Marsalis remembers the late Joe Temperley, a Scottish saxophonist who was part of the orchestra for 25 years. Temperley’s talent and dedication left a lasting impression on the group, and this year’s festival will pay tribute to him. Marsalis says that playing music is always personal, but this year it is even more meaningful because of the orchestra’s history with Scotland and Nicola Benedetti’s vision for the festival.

The opening concert will feature Marsalis’s symphonic work All Rise, performed by 200 singers and musicians. The piece blends African chants, New Orleans parade music, gospel, and Latin American styles, creating a powerful message about unity and humanity. Marsalis wrote All Rise to show how music can bring people together, even during difficult times. He believes that music education is more important than ever, and both he and Benedetti are passionate about sharing the power of music with others. The festival will also include performances by the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Theatre productions will explore American themes, including a five-hour staging of Angels in America and a new version of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, starring Brazilian actor Wagner Moura.

Families can look forward to special events like the Scottish premiere of Hostile, a one-man Spaghetti Western, and a concert by the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, who will perform with Scottish musicians from Big Noise. The festival will run from August 7 to August 30, 2026, with tickets available soon. Nicola Benedetti hopes that this year’s programme will inspire audiences and artists alike, encouraging everyone to see each other more truthfully and with greater understanding. She believes that the American story, with its mix of innovation, struggle, and creativity, has produced some of the most extraordinary art in history.
