Manni Sandhu believes that the growing popularity of Forever is indicative of a renewed interest in the traditional sounds of Punjabi folk music. He states, 'The duet phase is definitely coming back,' and attributes this shift to a desire for authenticity in music. Manni reflects on how the industry had previously tried to mimic Western styles, which he feels did not resonate with audiences. He is pleased to see a return to a more traditional sound in recent music, noting that while Forever maintains some urban beats, its vocals and lyrics reflect an authentic old-school Punjabi folk vibe. The influence of legendary artists like Amar Singh Chamkila cannot be overlooked in this revival. Chamkila, often referred to as the 'Elvis of Punjab,' was a major figure in the 1980s bhangra scene, known for his duet performances with Amarjot. The recent Netflix biopic Chamkila, featuring Diljit Dosanjh, has reignited interest in his music and legacy. Following the film's release, rapper and songwriter Raja Kumari also contributed to the resurgence with her duet In Love, featuring Guru Randhawa. This song, which was filmed in Punjab, has amassed over 37 million views on YouTube, showcasing the audience's appetite for traditional duet-style songs. Raja Kumari expresses her excitement about this trend, stating, 'We're all going back to seeing the classics and understanding what was so special about that. ' She emphasizes the importance of preserving the original sounds of bhangra for younger generations, hoping that modern duets will inspire listeners to explore the roots of the genre. The revival of bhangra duets is not confined to mainstream music alone. Since the release of the Chamkila film, tribute acts like Sadi Jori have experienced a surge in bookings worldwide. Banger and Sammy, members of Sadi Jori, have noticed a significant increase in interest during their performances. They recently performed in India, where they were overwhelmed by the crowd's enthusiasm. Sammy recalls, 'It took us two minutes to get from our car to the stage. But to get from the stage back to our car, it took us two hours. ' Banger adds that while Punjabi duet singing has always been a part of the culture, it is now gaining more recognition and pride among audiences. They have received bookings in various locations, including places where Chamkila originally performed, as well as in Dubai, Bulgaria, Australia, and Italy. Banger enthusiastically states, 'Punjabi music duet singing is definitely back, it's gone through the roof. ' This resurgence highlights the enduring appeal of bhangra music and its ability to evolve while staying true to its roots.
