Researchers have made an exciting discovery in Ireland that changes what we know about the first people who lived there. At a hidden spot on a hillside in south-west Ireland, scientists found a cave with ancient art on its walls. This art is the oldest evidence of humans in Ireland, and it suggests that the first people to arrive came from Wales. During the last Ice Age, the sea levels were much lower, and a land bridge connected Wales and Ireland. This bridge made it possible for people and animals to walk between the two places. The land was cold, but it had grass and forests, and many large animals like mammoths, bison, and reindeer lived there. The people who crossed the land bridge were hunters and gatherers who followed these animals for food.
Dr. George Nash from Liverpool University led a team of experts from different countries to search for signs of early humans in Ireland. They used new technology, including artificial intelligence, to help them find caves that might have art inside. By studying caves in Wales, they taught a computer to look for similar places in Ireland. The computer found 28 possible caves, and the team explored them. In eight of these caves, they found art that is at least 15,000 years old. This is much older than the oldest human evidence found in Ireland before, which was about 10,500 years old. The art includes pictures of animals, lines, and shapes scratched or painted on the walls. Some of the art was made by pressing fingers into soft clay, and it looks like it could have been made by children.
The caves were important for early people because they were warmer than the freezing temperatures outside. People used animal skins and fires to stay comfortable and safe from wild animals. There was a lot of competition to live in these caves, especially as families grew and more people moved west and north. The researchers believe there are still more caves to find in Ireland, and they are excited to keep searching. This discovery shows that people have been living in Ireland much longer than anyone thought, and it helps us understand how early humans moved and lived in Europe.
