Adam Back, a well-known British Bitcoin developer, has publicly denied being the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, after a recent New York Times article suggested he might be. The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has been one of the internet's biggest mysteries for years, with many people speculating about who could be behind the famous cryptocurrency. Adam Back has been accused of being Satoshi before, but he told the BBC that the New York Times was just seeing what it wanted to see. He explained that while he was interested in cryptography, online privacy, and digital money, he was not the person who invented Bitcoin.

The New York Times article compared Adam Back's emails and online posts to those of Satoshi Nakamoto and found some similarities. They also noticed that Adam Back seemed to stop posting on Bitcoin forums around the same time Satoshi disappeared. However, Adam Back disagreed with this idea. He said he was actually very active on the forums during that time and that the evidence was just a mix of coincidences and similar phrases used by people with similar interests. He even joked on social media that he wished he had mined more Bitcoin in the early days, because if he were Satoshi, he would be one of the richest people in the world. Satoshi is believed to own more than a million Bitcoins, which would be worth about $70 billion today.

This is not the first time someone has been named as the creator of Bitcoin. In 2024, an HBO documentary claimed that Canadian crypto expert Peter Todd was Satoshi, but he denied it and provided evidence to show he was not. That same year, a British man named Stephen Mollah also claimed to be Satoshi, but his claim was mostly ignored. Over the years, other people have been suggested as Satoshi, including Dorian Nakamoto and Craig Wright, but none of these claims have been proven. In fact, many people in the Bitcoin community think it is better if Satoshi's identity remains a secret, because it adds to the power and mystery of Bitcoin. Adam Back himself said he does not know who Satoshi is and thinks it is good for Bitcoin that the creator's identity is still unknown.
