Rare and sacred Islamic artefacts have been put on display at the North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe, giving visitors a unique opportunity to view items that are usually only seen by those who travel to Mecca. Many of these artefacts are centuries old and hold significant religious and historical value. Among the highlights of the exhibition are a key to the resting place of the Prophet Muhammad and a rare Kiswa cloth, which is used to cover the Kaaba, the sacred stone structure at the heart of the Great Mosque in Mecca. The Kiswa is especially notable for its intricate embroidery in 22-carat gold thread, making it both a religious symbol and a work of art.

The exhibition is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, and organizers hope it will serve as a way to connect visitors through shared appreciation of history, beauty, and craftsmanship. Abid Khan, a representative from the North Lincolnshire Multi-Faith Partnership, explained that the artefacts would evoke memories for those who have made the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj. He described the pilgrimage as a 'lifetime journey' and said that seeing these items up close can bring back powerful memories of the experience. Khan also emphasized the importance of craftsmanship, noting that many of the artefacts are embroidered with gold thread and display remarkable skill and artistry.

In addition to the Kiswa cloth and the key to the Prophet Muhammad's resting place, the exhibit features a lock and key from the Kaaba, inscribed with Arabic writing and presented in a decorative box covered in green and white cloth. The event is organized by the Kiswa Arts and Culture Gallery in partnership with the North Lincolnshire Multi-Faith Partnership, with support from North Lincolnshire Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The exhibition will run until December 6, and admission is free, making it accessible to everyone who wishes to learn more about Islamic history and culture.
