Hull Maritime Museum has reopened its doors to the public after being closed for six years for a major renovation. The museum, located in the centre of Hull, tells the story of the city's long history with the sea. It highlights Hull's role as a centre for trade, fishing, migration, and whaling, not just in Britain but around the world. The museum has been given a £20 million makeover, and visitors are excited to see all the new changes. There are now about 1,300 objects on display, including interactive exhibits, ship models, maritime art, and a huge 40-foot whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling.
Katy Robinson, who is 27, travelled from Driffield to see the new museum. She said, 'It's brilliant. The work they've done is incredible and all the exhibits and everything here is so interesting. ' Katy remembers visiting the museum as a child, either with her grandparents or on a school trip. She was really looking forward to seeing how the museum had changed. She thinks the new displays and the building itself are amazing and that the museum is a great place for both locals and visitors.
Ruth Toynton, 43, and her family were among the first people to visit the museum after it reopened. Ruth said, 'We are just really impressed. ' Her family had visited the museum before, and they were happy to see all the improvements. Ruth also said it was good to see so much investment in Hull. Janet Bark, 72, is a volunteer at the museum. She described the new museum as 'absolutely beautiful' and said she was excited to return to work. Janet said putting on her uniform and coming back to the museum felt like starting a new job. Ralph Marks, 82, is another volunteer who has returned. He said the museum is a fantastic resource for the city and that everyone should take advantage of it. He believes the museum will attract people from all over and is a great asset for Hull. Entry to the museum is free, but visitors are encouraged to book tickets during busy times. The renovation was paid for by the city council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Hull City Council leader Mike Ross said there is now 50 percent more floor space and more exhibits than before. He believes the public will love the new museum and will want to visit again and again.
