Tony's family shared that he died at Eastbourne District General Hospital in East Sussex, just eight days after his wife Fran, whom he had been married to for 63 years. They thanked the hospital staff for their incredible care during his final hours and also expressed gratitude to the nursing home staff for their compassion in recent months.

Shaun Williamson, who played Roy's son Barry Evans in EastEnders, spoke warmly about Tony, saying he was like a second father to him. Shaun posted on Instagram that Tony taught him a great deal about acting and life, calling him a great actor and a great man. He said he would miss Tony very much. Roy Evans arrived in Albert Square in 1994 and soon began dating Pat Butcher. The two married three years later, and their relationship became a central part of the show. One of the most memorable storylines during Tony's time on EastEnders was Pat's affair with her ex-husband Frank Butcher. Pat and Frank planned to run away together, but Pat changed her mind and stayed with Roy, and the couple managed to repair their relationship. Tony Caunter said that his time on EastEnders was the happiest period of his career. In addition to his role on EastEnders, Tony appeared in other television shows such as Pennies From Heaven, Tumbledown, Juliet Bravo, Doctor Who, and Boon. He leaves behind a daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
