Recycling plants are turning to robots as it becomes harder to find people willing to do the tough job of sorting waste. At the Sharp Group’s recycling facility in Rainham, east London, workers stand by conveyor belts, picking out all sorts of items from the trash, including shoes, old VHS tapes, and even chunks of concrete. The environment is dusty, noisy, and can be dangerous. The injury rate in this industry is much higher than in other jobs, and the work is not very appealing. Because of these challenges, the company has a high staff turnover, with about 40 percent of workers leaving each year. To make the job a bit easier, workers are rotated every 20 minutes and the conveyor belt is stopped sometimes to give them a break.
To help solve the problem of finding and keeping workers, the company is testing a robot called Alpha. Alpha is a humanoid robot, which means it is designed to move like a person. It is being trained to pick up and sort different types of waste. A worker wears a virtual reality headset to show Alpha how to do the job, and the robot learns by copying the worker’s movements. Cameras and special software help Alpha recognize items on the conveyor belt and learn from its mistakes. The goal is for Alpha to eventually work all day and night without needing breaks, holidays, or sick days. This could make the recycling process much more efficient and reliable.
Other companies are also using robots to sort waste. For example, AMP, a company based in Colorado, uses robots with air jets to push items into the right bins. These robots use artificial intelligence to get better at sorting over time and can work much faster than humans. Another company, Glacier, uses robotic arms and AI to sort trash, even in smaller recycling plants. The more these robots work, the smarter they get. Experts believe that using robots is the future of recycling because it makes the process safer, more efficient, and less dependent on human workers. People who used to sort trash can be trained to maintain and oversee the robots, moving them away from the dirty and dangerous parts of the job. This shift to automation is seen as necessary for the industry to keep up with demand and improve working conditions.
