Reddit explained that it does not require users to share much personal information, including their age, because it values privacy and safety. The ICO started looking into Reddit last March, along with other platforms like TikTok and Imgur, because they were concerned about how these sites were handling children's data.

The investigation found that even though Reddit's rules say children under 13 are not allowed, there were still many young users on the platform. This means Reddit was collecting and using children's data without a legal reason, which is against UK law. The law says companies must be extra careful with children's information because children might not understand the risks of sharing their data online. The ICO said Reddit needs to do better and is still reviewing the new age-checking systems Reddit has put in place.

A spokesperson for Reddit said that the ICO's demand for more private information from users goes against Reddit's belief in privacy. The company plans to appeal the fine. In recent years, Reddit has become much more popular in the UK. According to Ofcom, Reddit is now the 12th most visited website and the fourth most popular social media platform in the country. When new online safety rules started in July 2025, Reddit made changes so that users who had not verified their age could not see certain parts of the site, especially those with adult content.

The ICO is working closely with Ofcom, which enforces the Online Safety Act, to make sure children are protected online. Ofcom has also fined other websites that did not have proper age checks to stop children from seeing adult material. Social media expert Matt Navarra said that the actions of the ICO and Ofcom show that the UK is getting much stricter about online safety for children. He said Reddit is now being treated as a major social platform with big responsibilities, not just a fun forum.
