Victoria Ford is a 23-year-old fashion graduate who has found a creative way to help both the environment and a local children's hospice. She has always loved making her own clothes, starting when she got her first sewing machine at age 10. Most of her wardrobe is either homemade or bought from charity shops. Victoria noticed that Derian House Children's Hospice in Chorley received a huge amount of clothing donations, but many of these items were too stained, torn, or damaged to sell. She was surprised by how much was being thrown away and thought it was unfair that people treated the charity shop like a rubbish bin.
Instead of letting these unwanted clothes go to landfill, Victoria decided to upcycle them into unique, stylish pieces. She took two bags of unsellable clothes from the hospice's warehouse and transformed them into one-of-a-kind skirts, tops, and accessories. She even made handbags out of old blow-up beds. One of her favorite pieces is a silver satin top that she created from a worn dressing gown. Victoria says she loves being creative and enjoys the challenge of making something new and beautiful from items that would otherwise be wasted. She believes her work is not only good for the charity but also helps promote sustainable fashion.
Mick Croskery from Derian House says Victoria's collection has attracted new customers to the shop. The charity has been struggling with an overflow of rags, with up to half of the donated clothing being too worn or damaged to sell. In the past, they could sell these rags for a small amount, but now they get almost nothing for them. Sometimes, they even receive things like used nappies, which cost money to dispose of. Mick is grateful for Victoria's help, as her upcycled designs are giving new value to items that would have been thrown away. He hopes people will think carefully before donating and only give items that are still in good condition. Derian House cares for over 400 children and their families and needs more than £6 million each year to run. Victoria's creative work is making a real difference by reducing waste and supporting the hospice.
