Every Saturday, Errol and his ten-year-old son Isaac join other local fathers and their children for different activities, such as exploring nature, playing in soft play centers, or simply going for walks in the park. Errol believes that doing things together helps build a stronger bond between parents and children. He has noticed that Isaac is more cheerful and engaged when they spend time together away from screens. Errol says that it is important to find activities that are interesting enough to make children want to put down their devices. He also points out that being involved in your child's life, rather than just letting them play alone, helps create meaningful connections.

Research supports the idea that playing and talking with children is crucial for their development. A study led by Dr Samuel Forbes and Professor John Spencer found that children who have more in-person conversations and interactions develop stronger language skills. The researchers discovered that these children had higher levels of myelin in their brains, which helps them process language more efficiently. Kirsty MacDonald from the National Literacy Trust says that many families, especially those facing financial difficulties, struggle to find time and resources for activities that support their children's language and communication skills. She explains that work schedules and the cost of local activities can make it hard for parents to limit screen time.

Despite these challenges, some parents are finding creative ways to use screens as a tool for bonding. Sam, a member of Leeds Dads, enjoys making music on his tablet and now shares this hobby with his five- and six-year-old children. He says that making music together has become a special way for them to connect. Sam admits that it is not always easy to introduce new activities, especially when everyone is tired after a long day. Sometimes, the best option is to relax and watch TV together as a family.

Communities are also stepping in to help families find alternatives to screen time. Libraries, for example, are creating new spaces for interactive learning and play. At Irlam Library in Salford, there are outdoor 'story nooks' and play-based reading activities. Abigail, a teacher and mother of two, takes her daughters to the library garden to read and play. She tries to encourage her children to explore their interests away from screens, such as painting or having a picnic in the garden. Abigail says that listening to her children's ideas for activities often leads to fun and unexpected experiences.

Overall, parents are doing their best to balance screen time with meaningful activities. They want to help their children grow and learn in a healthy way, even when life gets busy. By finding creative ways to connect, families can make the most of their time together and support their children's development.
