China has become the world’s top producer of batteries for electric vehicles, or EVs, and now makes more than three-quarters of all lithium-ion batteries globally. This wasn’t always the case. In 2005, China had only two companies making EV batteries. The turning point came during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when the country used electric buses powered by lithium-ion batteries to transport athletes and officials. This was China’s first big step into the EV battery industry, and it set the stage for the country’s rapid growth in this field.

At that time, making lithium-ion batteries was a big challenge. The industry was very small, and only a few companies had the technology. But the Chinese government saw an opportunity. They created policies to help local companies grow, such as giving subsidies to carmakers that used Chinese-made batteries. This protected the domestic market and allowed companies like CATL and BYD to become industry leaders. The government also invested in building supply chains and charging networks, making it easier for people to buy and use electric vehicles.

China’s large population and growing interest in electric cars also played a big role. The government offered financial incentives to people who bought EVs, which made them more affordable. As more people bought electric cars, the demand for batteries increased, and Chinese companies learned how to produce them on a massive scale. They focused on making batteries that were not only cheaper but also safer and more powerful. This combination of government support, a huge market, and a focus on innovation helped China become the world leader in EV batteries. Today, Chinese companies control almost every part of the battery supply chain, from making the batteries to building the cars. Other countries are trying to catch up, but experts say it will be very difficult to match China’s scale and expertise. However, if new battery technologies are developed, there may still be opportunities for other countries to compete. For now, China’s lead in the EV battery industry seems secure.
