Mark Požlep, an artist from Slovenia, created a new art installation called Leviathan after walking the entire 100-kilometer length of the Suffolk coast. His journey was inspired by the lives of fishermen and the changes they have faced due to technology, politics, and climate shifts. Požlep spent time talking to North Sea fishermen, especially those who had retired, to understand how their work and connection to the sea have changed over the years. He discovered that people and nature often act like rivals, with humans trying to control nature, but nature remaining powerful and unpredictable. These conversations and observations became the foundation for his artwork, which is now on display at St Clement's Church in Ipswich as part of the Spill Festival.

The Leviathan installation features images Požlep took while meeting fishermen along the coast, combined with a soundscape that captures the atmosphere of the sea and the stories he heard. The fishermen spoke about issues such as overfishing, the impact of European Union quotas, and the effects of Brexit, which did not turn out as many had hoped. They also shared their deep connection to the sea and how their lives were shaped by it. Požlep explained that his artwork is not meant to preach or shout a message, but rather to offer an observation of the changes and challenges faced by fishing communities. He believes it is important to remember and reflect on these stories, as fishing has played a significant role in English identity.

As part of the festival, Požlep will join Dr Tom Johnson, a professor of medieval history at Oxford, for a talk about the history of fishing villages like Walberswick. Dr Johnson is researching how Walberswick thrived after the nearby village of Dunwich was damaged by a storm in the 1200s. He noted that fishing was a major employer and shaped the identity of these coastal communities, but it is not always recognized as part of the national story like other industries. The festival's artistic director, Robin Deacon, said that events like Spill help bring art and creativity into everyday life, making it accessible to people who might not visit traditional galleries or theaters. Leviathan is one of many performances and activities taking place in Ipswich from October 23 to 26, highlighting the town's vibrant cultural scene.
