Because of this, some researchers and companies are looking for new sources of helium-3. There is a little bit of helium-3 in the Earth's ground, but it is very rare. However, when astronauts brought back moon dust from the Apollo missions, they found that it contained more helium-3 than Earth's soil. This discovery has led to new plans to try to mine helium-3 from the moon. Helium-3 is a special type of helium, different from the kind used in party balloons, which is called helium-4. Scientists use helium-3 in experiments, such as trying to detect dark matter, which is a mysterious substance in space. If a dark matter particle hits a helium-3 atom, it causes a tiny amount of heat that scientists can measure. Helium-3 is also used to make things extremely cold, which is necessary for quantum computers to work. These computers need to be kept at temperatures close to absolute zero, and helium-3 helps achieve that. Some people believe that helium-3 could also be used in the future to create large amounts of clean energy. One company, Interlune, is working on technology to mine helium-3 from the moon. They have spent four years developing and testing their machines, and their team is growing. One of the company's founders even walked on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission. Interlune has tested its equipment on special flights that simulate zero gravity, and they hope to send their machines to the moon as early as 2027. Their plan is to use robots to dig up the moon's surface, crush the dust, and extract the helium-3. However, scientists are not sure exactly how much helium-3 is on the moon. Some believe that the samples brought back to Earth may have lost some helium-3, making it hard to know the true amount. It could take a lot of work to get even a small amount of helium-3. Another company, Astrotech, also wants to mine helium-3 from the moon. They plan to use a SpaceX rocket to get there and will heat the moon dust to release the gas. They are still working on their technology, but they are optimistic about their chances. Quantum computers could need thousands of litres of helium-3 in the future, depending on how they are built. Some companies are already making agreements to buy helium-3 from the moon if it becomes available. But there are other options being explored. Some scientists are trying to find ways to cool quantum computers without using helium-3. Others are searching for helium-3 in the Earth's crust. For example, a company called Pulsar Helium is investigating a site in Minnesota where there is some helium-3 in the ground. Getting helium-3 from Minnesota would be much easier than going to the moon. As technology advances, scientists and companies are working hard to find the best way to get this rare and valuable gas for the future.
