Despite these challenges, Tina praises Beyoncé and Jay-Z for being amazing parents. She says, 'The truth is they spend an abnormal amount of time with their children and they have great relationships with their kids. And they're just great parents. I don't think you could ask for better parents. ' Tina Knowles is speaking to BBC News as she prepares to release her new memoir, titled Matriarch. This book covers her life, including her childhood in Texas, her daughters' rise to fame, and her experiences as a grandmother. Tina now has four grandchildren, including Julez Smith, the son of her younger daughter, Solange. She describes her grandchildren as 'one of the biggest joys in my life' and shares that she has a close bond with Blue Ivy. Tina says, 'I'm so happy that she feels like she can talk to me,' and adds that Blue Ivy often gives her advice on self-care. Tina affectionately refers to Blue Ivy as 'my beauty guru' and 'my manager,' explaining that everyone else calls her that because of her bossy nature. Tina Knowles grew up in Galveston, Texas, during the 1950s and 60s, as the youngest of seven children. In her memoir, she discusses the challenges her family faced, including racial tension and harassment from the police. She recalls, 'There was a lot of racial tension,' and while she believes some things have improved, she still feels that black people are more vulnerable to police brutality. Tina met her ex-husband, Mathew Knowles, in Houston, and they had two daughters, Beyoncé in 1981 and Solange five years later. She describes Beyoncé as a baby who was not easy to care for, saying that nursery rhymes did not soothe her, but jazz music did. In contrast, Solange was a social butterfly, while Beyoncé was shy and often tried to be invisible in school. Tina reflects on how, during their childhood, her daughters and other little black girls were bombarded with messages from mainstream culture that made them feel 'less than. ' However, both Beyoncé and Solange showed their musical talents from a young age. Tina recalls, 'I knew Beyoncé had a very beautiful voice, but I didn't know how talented she was until she was seven. ' Tina is adamant that she never forced her daughters into the music industry. She states, 'Absolutely not. This was not my first choice for my girls. They just lived and breathed music. ' She wanted them to experience a normal teenage life, but they were more interested in singing and performing. In the 1990s, Beyoncé and her friends formed a girl group called Destiny's Child, which became incredibly famous with hits like Bills, Bills, Bills and Say My Name. Tina played a significant role in their success by making costumes for the group, while Mathew quit his job to manage them. Both Beyoncé and Solange have gone on to have successful solo careers, with Beyoncé winning numerous awards for her music, including a Grammy for her album Cowboy Carter, which celebrates the black roots of country music. Tina believes that Beyoncé's upbringing in Texas and Louisiana greatly influenced her music style. She says, 'It is in her. It’s in her right to make whatever music she feels like making. ' As her daughters gained fame, they faced intense media scrutiny and negative comments. Tina notes that her daughters are skilled at ignoring the lies and negativity. She explains, 'While the world is creating lies and mess, my girls are somewhere in the studio or with their kids minding their business and living their best life. ' Tina also shares her personal battle with breast cancer, revealing that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer but is now cancer-free, thanks to her daughters and her faith. Looking ahead, Tina is optimistic about what her daughters and grandchildren will achieve. She emphasizes that they are being encouraged to pursue their passions but are not being pushed into the entertainment industry. Blue Ivy is already making strides in her career, having voiced a character in The Lion King prequel and performed alongside her mother. Tina stresses that the priority is for her grandchildren to grow up to be good people. She is also considering adapting her memoir into a movie, expressing her admiration for family stories in the entertainment industry.
