Andy Beese, better known as Beezer, is a photographer who has spent decades capturing the vibrant music scene and youth culture of Bristol. Starting his journey at the age of 16 in 1982, Beezer was given a camera while studying audio visual at Brunel College. This gift sparked a lifelong passion for photography, which he describes as a continuation of his teenage years. Over the years, he has documented everything from street music and protests to festivals and famous musicians, creating a rich visual history of the city. His latest work, a double picture album titled Until Now, is set to be released on July 7 by Bristol publisher PC Press.

Beezer’s photographs offer a raw and honest look at life in Bristol during the 1980s and beyond. He captured the energy of events like the St Paul’s Carnival and the Glastonbury Festival, as well as portraits of influential artists such as Mark Stewart, The Wild Bunch, and Massive Attack. His images also include social documentary sections that highlight protests and other important moments in the city’s history. Beezer recalls that despite the difficult economic times under Margaret Thatcher’s government, with many people struggling financially, the music scene was alive and thriving. He fondly remembers the reggae sound systems and the excitement of going out every night with his camera to capture the culture he loved.

Beyond sharing his photographs, Beezer offers advice to aspiring photographers. He encourages them to use photography as a tool to connect with their interests and build confidence. Whether it’s dancing or any other passion, a camera can help people get closer and find their place within a community. Beezer feels proud of his new book, especially because it preserves memories of people who have since passed away. His work serves as a lasting tribute to the spirit of Bristol’s youth and music culture, reminding us that while people may not be around forever, images can keep their stories alive.
