Google, one of the world’s largest technology companies, is spending more money than ever before on artificial intelligence, or AI. Despite making a lot of money, Alphabet’s spending on AI has caused its free cash flow to drop into negative numbers for the first time in at least ten years. Free cash flow is the money a company has left after paying for its regular business costs and investments. In the last quarter, Alphabet’s free cash flow was negative $5. 9 billion, even though their total revenue was $119. 8 billion, which is 23 percent higher than the same time last year. This means that even though the company is earning more, it is also spending much more, especially on AI.

Anat Ashkanazi, Google’s chief financial officer, explained that most of the money was spent on servers and data centers, which are needed to run AI programs. She said that 60 percent of the spending went to servers and 40 percent to data centers. Ashkanazi also mentioned that the demand for AI is still higher than what they are investing, so Google plans to keep spending more. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, said that AI is still in its early stages and that there are many opportunities ahead. However, some investors are worried about the high costs, and Google’s stock price fell by about 4 percent after the news. Other companies, like Tesla, are also spending a lot on new technology and reported negative cash flow, which caused their stock prices to drop as well. Even though these companies are spending a lot now, they believe it will help them grow and succeed in the future.
