A new £20 million research hub is being set up in Cambridge to help develop new medicines using artificial intelligence and advanced laboratory models. The hub will be located at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, which is part of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The Medical Research Council is providing the funding, and the hub will work closely with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The main goal is to use scientific models based on human tissues and diseases to improve how research in the lab can be turned into real medicines for people.

The hub will use lab-grown mini-organs called organoids, which are made from stem cells. These organoids can act like real human organs, allowing scientists to study diseases and test new treatments in a way that is more accurate than using animals. Artificial intelligence will also play a big role, helping researchers analyze data and predict how diseases might behave or how treatments might work. Professor Matthias Zilbauer, one of the leaders of the hub, explained that these human models let scientists study diseases more closely and test possible treatments before they are tried on patients. This could lead to more effective and personalized therapies, while also reducing the time and cost it takes to develop new drugs.

The hub will be led by Professor Zilbauer and Professor Bertie Göttgens, who is the director of the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. They believe that by bringing together hospitals, research institutes, and industry partners from Cambridge and across the UK, the hub will speed up the development of new research tools that better reflect human biology. This should help improve the process of creating new therapies. Other partners in the project include the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The hope is that this new hub will make it possible to develop better medicines that are tailored to individual patients, while also making the whole process faster and less expensive.
