This year, they have recorded a staggering 563,590 child victims in images alone, with the majority being girls aged between seven and ten. Mabel emphasizes that the methods used by criminals to hide their content are constantly changing, making it increasingly difficult for her and her colleagues to do their jobs effectively. She mentions that sometimes, she has to watch a video to find a password that leads to another video containing harmful content. The IWF also has a technology team that is always on the lookout for new software to help them crack codes and find hidden material. Dan Sexton, the chief technology officer at the IWF, shares that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are making their work even more challenging. He explains that with the rise of generative AI, criminals now have the ability to create an almost infinite amount of new child sexual abuse content. This year alone, the IWF has encountered over 2. 7 million unique images of child sexual abuse, and this number continues to grow. Dan acknowledges that while these figures may be shocking to some, they do not come as a surprise to him. He attributes the successful removal of these images to the hard work and dedication of staff members like Mabel and the other frontline workers. The IWF takes the mental health of its employees seriously, providing mandatory counseling sessions and regular breaks to help them cope with the emotional toll of their work. Mabel, who previously worked as a police officer, finds her role at the IWF to be both challenging and rewarding.
