Amber Woodward is a 16-year-old student from Abergele, in north Wales, who has a rare and challenging allergy. Whenever the temperature drops below 12 degrees Celsius, Amber’s body reacts by breaking out in red, itchy hives. This condition, called cold urticaria, means that even a cool breeze in the summer can trigger a reaction. Amber says she is always worried about having an allergic reaction and wishes she could live a normal life without having to think about her allergy all the time.

Amber’s allergy affects her daily life in many ways. She has to wear leggings under her clothes almost every day, even when it is not very cold, to protect her skin. She feels self-conscious because she thinks people are always looking at her when she has hives. Activities like swimming or eating cold foods and drinks can also cause her to break out in hives. The charity Anaphylaxis UK says that the cause of cold urticaria is unknown, and it can be hard to diagnose and treat because everyone’s symptoms are different.

Amber remembers the first time she had a reaction. She was walking home from her part-time job as a waitress when her face, ears, legs, and arms turned red and itchy. At first, she thought it was something she ate, but the rash came back even when she avoided food. Her doctor thought it might be pollution and did not give her any medicine. Amber’s mother became very worried and made her wear extra layers of clothing. After doing her own research, Amber found out about cold urticaria and was referred to a dermatologist, who confirmed the diagnosis. She was shocked because the condition is so rare, but she was also relieved to finally have an answer.

Even with medication, Amber’s symptoms have not improved much. She still gets hives almost every day, especially when she comes out of water, no matter the temperature. She often arrives at work and school with red, itchy skin and sometimes has to cancel plans with friends. Amber feels left out because she cannot join her friends for outdoor activities. They have to plan carefully so she can join them indoors, but she still misses out on a lot. Despite these challenges, Amber remains hopeful. She is trying new antihistamine injections every four weeks and hopes that more research will lead to better treatments. Amber just wants to be able to do everyday things like everyone else, without being afraid of the cold.
