Knebworth House, located in Hertfordshire, England, is famous for hosting some of the biggest rock concerts in history. Before it became a music venue, the Lytton Cobbold family used the house to welcome important guests like Winston Churchill and Charles Dickens. Henry Lytton Cobbold, who owns the estate today, has many memories of these legendary concerts. One of the most famous events was Queen’s last concert with Freddie Mercury on August 9, 1986. Henry was 24 years old at the time and remembers the wild celebrations backstage, which included fairground rides and even mud wrestling. He says the band had a lot to celebrate because they had performed so well the year before. Sadly, this concert became legendary for another reason: it was Freddie Mercury’s final performance with Queen. Five years later, Mercury died from an illness, but at the time of the concert, nobody knew he was sick. The concert was attended by 125,000 people, but there is very little video of the show because nobody recorded it properly. Only a small amount of news footage and a shaky home video from a fan exist. Henry’s brother was part of the team that painted the stage black the night before, so Freddie Mercury could be seen better on stage. Henry never met Queen, but he did meet other stars who played at Knebworth. In the past, bands would stay at the house after their concerts instead of leaving right away. Knebworth Park started hosting concerts in 1974, with Pink Floyd as the first major act. The Rolling Stones played the next year, and many other famous bands followed, including Genesis, Led Zeppelin, The Beach Boys, and Cliff Richard. Henry’s parents loved to throw parties, and the concerts made these parties even bigger. In the 1990s, Knebworth became even more famous when Oasis played two huge concerts there in 1996. That summer was a big time for the UK, with events like Euro 96, the Spice Girls’ debut, and Dolly the sheep being cloned. The Oasis concerts were attended by 250,000 people, and Henry remembers that a lot of beer was sold. The band slept backstage in Winnebagos, and after the show, Noel Gallagher took a bath in the house and was given champagne by Henry’s dad. Noel later joked in interviews that he was served by a servant, but it was really Henry’s father. Oasis did not release recordings from the concerts until many years later, but their legacy at Knebworth remains strong. The money from the concerts helped build two new towers on the house, named Noel and Liam after the Gallagher brothers. However, the house still needs repairs, and Henry hopes Oasis will return to help raise more money. Robbie Williams played the biggest concert at Knebworth in 2003, with 375,000 people in the audience. There are rumors that Oasis might play at Knebworth again, but nothing has been confirmed. Henry hopes they will return, possibly when their new documentary is released. He says the local authorities are supporting the idea, but no plans are final yet. Knebworth House continues to be a special place for music fans, and many people hope to see more legendary concerts there in the future.
