Peter Marinker is a well-known actor who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease two years ago. Alzheimer's is a condition that affects memory and can make everyday life challenging. Despite this, Peter is preparing to perform a one-man show in London, taking on the lead role in Samuel Beckett's famous play, Krapp's Last Tape. At 85 years old, Peter has had a long career in acting, including voice work for radio, video games, and movies like Labyrinth and Paddington in Peru. He also appeared in Love Actually and played Gandalf in a stage version of Lord of the Rings. His diagnosis came after he started feeling confused and had trouble remembering things, which led him to see a doctor. After several tests, he learned he had Alzheimer's, and he decided to accept it and even laugh at himself when he forgets things.

Earlier this year, Dave Wybrow, the director of the Cockpit Theatre, reached out to Peter with the idea of performing Krapp's Last Tape. The play is about an aging writer who listens to recordings of his younger self and reflects on his life. Even though Peter sometimes gets rehearsal dates mixed up, he was eager to take on the challenge. The production team has been very supportive, giving him extra time to rehearse and setting up special tools to help him remember his lines. There will be autocue screens around the stage, a stage manager nearby, and Peter will wear a small earpiece so he can be prompted if he forgets what to say.

This is not Peter's first time performing Krapp's Last Tape. He first played the role in 1983, and the team found old recordings from that performance to use in the new show. Alzheimer's affects different types of memory, and while Peter sometimes forgets new things, he can still remember things he learned long ago, like his lines from the play. All the profits from the show will go to the Alzheimer's Society, which supports people with dementia. Many people with dementia feel ashamed or worried about what others will think, but Peter hopes his performance will show that people with Alzheimer's can still do things they love. He calls this play his 'wonderful swan song' and wants to make the most of his time on stage. The show will run at the Cockpit Theatre in London from September 2 to 5.
